Humanities Curriculum

At Ilsington CE Primary our motto is “Small school, big heart, big ideas, big picture”, as a small rural primary we believe that it is essential for our children to look out into the wider world and to see the bigger picture. We want all of our children to have curiosity about the world and how it works , its past and the present. We need to ensure that our children are open minded, curious, questioning, tolerant and kind. In order to achieve this for our pupils we have built a humanities curriculum that encourages them to think about local and national issues and to develop an interest in finding out about the world around them. We aim to inspire our children as lifelong learners and as citizens of the world able to reflect on their knowledge and to build their own understanding. We hope that our children will be informed and able to make decisions about the future of their world and to make a difference in their own unique ways.

Knowledge Organisers and Topic Maps.

At Ilsington CE Primary, we like to give our families opportunity to be involved in their children’s learning and at the beginning of each term we share a Topic map, outlining details of the learning that their children will be enjoying at school.

In classes, we have also been developing the use of knowledge organisers and have begun to share these with families too. Knowledge organisers are shared with children to help them to gain and retain some of the key vocabulary, facts and diagrams that will support the children’s learning. They are shared with children at the beginning of the topic and each child has a copy, in their book. Knowledge organisers don’t contain everything that the children will learn but provide an easy source of reference and help them to build knowledge.
