Metacognition

We have been carrying out research into metacognition and how we can enable our children to be able to think effectively about their thought processes and how they learn.
We began with the introduction of four characters to help children to understand the meaning of the "4Rs" Resourcefulness, Reciprocity, Reflectivity and Resilience.
The children understood this as building learning power or BLP.
We also introduced children to the idea of the "Learning Pit" as a visual to support their self assessment whilst grappling with learning which presents challenge.
At the beginning of summer 2023 we carried out workshops across the school which were designed to help all children to understand how to understand their own metacognitive processes. We are keen to enable our pupils to be able to meet challenge and to adopt strategies which support them when they face challenge. We have a particular focus on maths reasoning and problem solving.
The staff explored and discussed their own use of metacognition prior to teaching the children and we shared examples of their conversations with the children too.
