English Curriculum

At Ilsington CE Primary we draw on the teaching and expertise of the writer and teacher Pie Corbett. His advice on choosing books for children and his recommended "book spines" influences the choices of texts we use in school and offer families looking to choose books for their children, guidance too.

Phonics

Our school has invested in the Phonics Bug Club system which is a DfE validated phonics scheme. Bug Club Phonics uses the systematic synthetic phonics approach and meets Ofsted's requirements for the teaching of phonics.

We have a coherent phonics teaching approach across the school from pre-school into KS2.

Bug Club provides online phonics teaching resources and matching decodable books and enables teachers to carefully assess and teach to individual children's needs ensuring that children construct a sound phonic base from which to build their reading and spelling.

Our children have books to take home and access to digital resources to support their reading and phonics knowledge with their families.

We recognise the importance of embedding children's phonic knowledge to allow them to become competent readers and writers as they move up through the school. Where children face challenge in developing secure phonic knowledge we provide extra and extended phonics teaching into key stage two to ensure that these important building blocks are in place.
