Welcome to Ilsington

Welcome to Ilsington C of E Primary School

At Ilsington, we pride ourselves on being a warm, caring, and inclusive school where every child feels valued and supported. Children are welcomed into our school family from age two, and we provide a nurturing environment that helps them grow in confidence, curiosity, and independence.

We believe that school should be a place where children belong—a community built on friendship, kindness, and respect. Our strong Christian ethos and close links with the local church guide us in everything we do, ensuring that children not only thrive academically but also develop compassion and care for others.

Learning at Ilsington is engaging, creative, and inspiring. Teachers carefully match tasks and resources to meet the needs of all pupils, giving every child the chance to succeed. Sometimes children work in groups, sometimes independently, and other times as a whole class—but always in a supportive, encouraging atmosphere.

About Ilsington

Ilsington is one of the largest parishes in the country by area, though most of its population lives in only about 2% of it. The school sits in the heart of the village, opposite the historic St Michael’s Church.

The village itself is thriving, with a local pub, village hall, community-run shop, and a community bus. The school benefits greatly from these facilities: during term time we have use of the bus, we use the hall for PE and drama, and we gather weekly at the church for assembly. We also have an extremely well-developed Forest School site, used weekly, and a large playing field.

Just beyond, the village also offers an additional playing field with tennis courts, a playground, and a skate park.

Ilsington is steeped in history, from its 12th-century church to its rich tin-mining past. Surrounded by the beauty and natural resources of Dartmoor, we are fortunate to teach and learn in such an inspiring environment.
